The section below is for homeowners researching split system install costs. We break down how prices are calculated, show current Australian averages, and answer the questions we hear most. Every number reflects real 2026 rates from Australian tradies — not marketing fluff.
Get a free split system quote estimate based on your room size, preferred brand and installation requirements — no phone calls, no obligation.
Embed a branded split system calculator on your site. Homeowners self-estimate, you capture install-ready leads with system size, brand preference and contact details.
This calculator produces an estimate based on current Australian supply and installation rates — not a binding quote. Your installer will confirm the final price after a site visit.
GST handling: All estimates include 10% Australian GST. The GST component is shown separately in the cost breakdown.
Your room area in square metres is multiplied by a type-specific cooling factor to recommend a split system capacity in kW. Bedrooms use a lower factor than open-plan areas due to less heat load.
recommended_kw = ceil(room_area x kW_factor x 2) / 2The recommended kW is multiplied by a base cost-per-kW rate and a brand-tier multiplier (budget 1.0x, mid-range 1.35x, premium 1.8x) for each indoor unit ordered.
A base install fee applies per indoor unit. Multi-split systems add a premium for each unit beyond the first to cover shared outdoor unit wiring, gas charging and commissioning.
Additional costs cover extra pipe run beyond the standard 3 m, high-wall or scaffolding access, relocated outdoor units, and electrical work such as a new circuit or switchboard upgrade.
All line items are summed, a minimum job fee is applied if the total falls below the threshold, then 10% GST is added to produce the final installed price.
total = max(subtotal, min_fee) x 1.1Prices vary by region, brand and installer. Sydney and Melbourne typically sit 10–15% above these averages; regional areas can be 5–10% below.
| Job type | Low | Average | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 kW bedroom (budget) | $1,200 | $1,700 | $2,400 |
| 3.5 kW bedroom (mid-range) | $1,400 | $2,000 | $2,800 |
| 5 kW living room (mid-range) | $1,800 | $2,500 | $3,500 |
| 7 kW large room (mid-range) | $2,500 | $3,200 | $4,500 |
| 2-zone multi-split | $3,500 | $5,000 | $7,500 |
| 3-zone multi-split | $5,500 | $7,500 | $10,500 |

Sydney and Melbourne metro areas typically add 10–15% to these figures. Regional and rural areas may be 5–10% lower, though travel charges can offset savings.
