This calculator uses current 2026 electricity rates, feed-in tariffs, peak sun hours and STC rebate values sourced from the Clean Energy Regulator, AEMC and SolarQuotes. It provides a conservative estimate — your solar installer will confirm actual savings after assessing your roof, shading and energy use.
Should I get a battery with my solar system?
A battery can increase your self-consumption from around 30% to 60–80%, meaning you use more of your own solar power instead of exporting it at low feed-in tariff rates. Whether a battery makes financial sense depends on your usage pattern, electricity rate and the cost of the battery system. Your installer can model this for you.

How this solar savings estimate is calculated

This calculator produces a savings estimate, not a binding quote. Actual savings depend on your roof, shading, inverter efficiency and retailer rates.

GST handling: Solar savings are not subject to GST. The installed system cost shown includes GST and STC rebate deductions.

  1. Estimate annual consumption

    Your quarterly electricity bill is divided by your state's average grid rate to estimate annual kilowatt-hour consumption.

    annual_consumption = quarterly_bill ÷ grid_rate × 4

  2. Calculate system generation

    System size is multiplied by your state's average peak sun hours, 365 days and an orientation factor to estimate annual generation in kWh.

    annual_generation = kW × sun_hours × 365 × orientation_factor

  3. Split self-consumed vs exported

    Based on your daytime usage pattern, generation is split between energy you use directly (offsetting grid purchases at full rate) and energy exported to the grid (earning the feed-in tariff).

  4. Calculate annual saving

    Self-consumed energy saves you the full grid rate per kWh. Exported energy earns the feed-in tariff. These are combined into your total annual saving.

    annual_saving = (self_consumed × grid_rate) + (exported × feed_in_tariff)

  5. Determine payback and long-term return

    The installed cost after STC rebates is divided by your annual saving to estimate the payback period. Cumulative savings over 10 and 25 years include a 3% annual electricity price inflation assumption.
